Closing the lid usually works fine. It's the "hard shut downs" where you hold down the power button to turn it off that can be a problem, though a lot of newer laptops have addressed this issue, too.

I have a habit of just closing the lid and letting it go into sleep mode rather than shutting down so will take your advice and use the Start menu in future.
