Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.

Hello, I am the person who made the Wikipedia page for Beverly White. User:Pinkturkeys uploaded some photos and claims to be White's granddaughter. I find this very believable since none of these images show up in any image search and they have a collection of White's documents and images. @Jon698 Hey there. In order for any photos to stay on the Commons they need to meet certain copyright requirements. We would need to know what the copyright situation is. Just because someone owns a physical copy of a photo does not necessarily mean they own the copyright. I would wonder who the copyright belongs to (usually the photographer). For further advice and discussion I would recommend we bring those questions to Commons:Village_pump/Copyright for further discussion from others who may provide more insight on this. Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2024 voting is open!

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2024 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the nineteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2024) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on 27 September 2025, 23:59:59 UTC.

Question about simultaneous publication?

Hi Pascal, so I found this picture of the Beverly Hillbillies which as usual didn't had a proper copyright notice, but here's the thing, while trying to look at the date of this picture I found this ebay listing from the CBC which Properly dates this picture from September 1969. Since you are based in Canada I was wondering what happens to Copyright if simultaneous publication happened to Publicity Pics in both US and Canada and if this picture can be uploaded to Commons. I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first"). @Elisfkc Yeah, I used to use Flickr2Commons, but I stopped using it as it became more buggy and unusable for me. I mainly just upload using the built in 'Share images from Flickr' option in the UploadWizard. I find the native Commons option works just as well, and is much easier and user friendly.
